How can we help?
Everything you need to know about Backtick — from reading founder playbooks to running your team's AI-powered private knowledge base.
Playbooks & Learning
Public seed playbooks, team private playbooks, and how to read them.
Backtick is the Founders Startup Toolkit — built for founders and their teams at every stage. Irv's seed playbooks give you battle-tested frameworks before you have to learn things the hard way. Then you author your own playbooks to guide your team through those same frameworks as your company grows. Every playbook is AI-first: designed to be used alongside the built-in Gemini integration.
Three kinds of playbooks
- PublicAuthored by Irv Shapiro and the Backtick team. Available to everyone — registered users get full AI interaction. Topics include hiring, culture, fundraising, product strategy, and building with AI.
- PremiumDeeper content in the same public catalog. A single subscription unlocks all premium plays across every playbook on the platform.
- TeamPrivate to your organization — never in the public catalog. Use them for SOPs, onboarding guides, culture documents, and how-we-work frameworks.
Play access levels
- PublicFree and open to everyone — no account needed.
- RegisteredFree, but requires a Backtick account. Registration is always free — no credit card required.
- PremiumRequires an active premium subscription. One subscription unlocks all premium content.
- EnrolledRequires paid enrollment in that specific playbook. Enrollment gives full access to all plays.
AI Tools
Click-to-explain, Ask AI panel, image generation, and usage limits.
- ●Click any bullet — or select any text — for an instant explanation. The AI immediately explains what you clicked or selected in the context of what you're reading. No typing required.
- ●Course Content vs. General Knowledge. Explanations drawn from the playbook are labeled Course Content. Background the AI adds from general sources is labeled General Knowledge. You always know what came from the author and what the AI added.
- ●Ask your own questions using the Ask AI panel. Type any question and get an answer grounded in the content of the play you're reading.
- ●AI image generation. In the play editor, choose Upload, AI Generate, or Unsplash. Iteratively refine generated images before inserting. Image credits are tracked separately in your Account page.
AI features are available to all registered users. Free accounts include 10 AI queries per month. Premium accounts include 150 queries/month; Team accounts include 300/month (shared). For unlimited usage, add your own Google Gemini API key in Account Settings.
Spaces & Founder Scenarios
Real founder situations, peer perspectives, and AI-linked playbooks — all in one place.
Spaces is Backtick's community layer — where founders share real situations, exchange structured peer insights, and connect those discussions directly to playbooks and proven frameworks. Each Space brings together Irv's Playbooks, your Company Playbooks, and AI-augmented insights in one place.
Access by tier
- Free: Browse all Spaces and read scenarios, perspectives, and outcomes.
- Premium / Team: Post scenarios, add perspectives, and record outcomes.
Scenarios
A Scenario is a real situation a founder is actively navigating — structured with context so other founders can give genuinely useful input. Every Scenario includes the founder's stage, team size, traction, and what they've already tried.
- ●Every Scenario goes through an AI review for quality and community standards before becoming visible.
- ●Backtick's AI automatically tags themes — hiring, pricing, fundraising, product validation — and surfaces relevant playbooks.
- ●Your private Company Playbooks are also surfaced automatically when they're relevant to your own Scenarios.
Perspectives
Other founders respond with Perspectives — what they did in a similar situation, tied to real context and experience. Not generic opinions about what you should do, but what they actually did in a comparable situation.
Outcomes
After taking action, founders post an Outcome: what they decided, what happened, and whether it matched the advice. Outcomes close the loop and build a searchable record of what actually works — not just what people think.
AI Decision Plan
Every Scenario has a Build my decision plan button. Click it to get a structured AI analysis built around your specific situation — stage, team size, traction, and what you've already tried.
Why not just ask ChatGPT?
The problem with AI chat tools isn't the answers — it's knowing what to ask. General AI gives generic advice because it doesn't know your stage, your constraints, or what you've already tried. Backtick resolves this: the Scenario structure already captures all of that context, and the AI Decision Plan uses it automatically to produce a concrete decision-making framework — not just a chat response.
- ●Situation Assessment — what's really at stake and why it matters now
- ●Key Factors — the most important dimensions of the decision
- ●Decision Framework — a concrete, numbered process to work through the decision
- ●Recommended Path — direct advice based on your specific context
- ●Risks to Watch — what could go wrong and early warning signs to look for
Instead of asking, "What do people think?"
Spaces lets you ask: "What actually worked for founders like me?"
Teams & Private Knowledge Base
Private playbooks, AI-powered Q&A, member management, and progress tracking.
Team playbooks are more than documentation — they are a private knowledge base powered by AI. Every team member can ask questions and get answers drawn from what you wrote — your process, your culture, your decisions.
- ●Private playbooks — never in the public catalog. Visible only to active team members.
- ●AI grounded in your content. When a new hire asks "how do we handle a missed deadline?" Backtick answers from your playbook, not the internet.
- ●Living documents. Edit a play and the AI answers update for everyone immediately — no stale wikis, no version confusion.
- ●Progress tracking — see which team members have read which plays. Onboarding becomes measurable.
- ●Team Gemini key. Add your company's Gemini API key so your team's queries go through your own account — not Backtick's shared key.
- ●Search across everything. The team dashboard search bar finds matching playbooks, plays, and FAQ answers in one place — so the answer surfaces whether it lives in the SOP text or in a Q&A your team already asked.
Play FAQs — Living SOPs
Every team playbook play has a built-in FAQ. When something isn't clear, your team asks right on the play — and when you answer, that Q&A becomes a permanent part of the SOP. The next person reading it never has to ask.
- ●Questions live on the play they came from — in context, not buried in a chat thread
- ●AI Assist drafts an answer from the playbook itself — you review and publish
- ●New hires read the latest version with every prior question already answered
- ●Your SOPs get smarter every month — fed by real questions, not guesswork
Wikis are write-only. Backtick SOPs grow with your team.
Team admins review and answer questions from the Manage FAQ link on the team dashboard. A banner shows the count of pending questions so nothing slips through.
To create team playbooks, your account needs Team Manager status. Click My Teams in the navigation bar to request access.
